Thinking about spending time in service to others after graduation?

At SLU, service is a way of life, and our students are prepared to make the world a better place. Meet Patrick Graney-Dolan, who spent two years with AmeriCorps VISTA after graduation as the social media and marketing VISTA for Mission: St. Louis. Now, Patrick works on fundraising and copywriting as a development associate at a Chicago-area synagogue.

I Chose SLU Because...

Patrick Graney-Dolan, Class of 2019, says, “My older sister went to SLU starting in 2013. When I visited her, I said to myself, ‘I can kind of see myself being here.’ I visited again and said, ‘I really can see myself being here.’ Slowly but surely, it was a place where I truly felt at home just being on campus. The people around me created such a welcoming environment, and I knew I wanted to build that kind of community and transfer it to the world around me. I also received the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship, which I was able to utilize in order to attend SLU.”

Major decisions

“I thought I would be a sports business major when I entered college. However, I saw a greater ability to use marketing in a lot of different ways — I knew I could still pursue sports if I wanted, but I wanted to take something broader so I knew that I had more options. I’m so glad I did because the options I had presented to me at SLU led me to the path I’m on now.”

Agents of Change: Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship

SLU’s Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship is an academic award offered to students who have demonstrated leadership as agents of change or influence within their school and/or community activities.

King Scholars champion the ideals of Dr. King and his legacy of servant leadership, on campus and beyond. Learn more about the scholarship here.

Serving Others Through AmeriCorps VISTA

“Mission: St. Louis is a community hub organization dedicated to empowering individuals and families to break through the cycle of poverty. In my VISTA role, I oversaw Mission: St. Louis’ social media, email marketing, podcasting and different levels of copywriting at times. In this role, I not only gained so much experience, I gained friends for a lifetime and I was able to break down a lot of misconceptions in my mind about poverty. AmeriCorps was instrumental in how I view my career now and what I find passion in. I found that I can make a difference both within an organization with my skills, but then also translate that into the community around me.”

Highlights from a degree at SLU

I Got Here with SLU

“I knew my education at SLU gave me really good foundations in my abilities as a marketer. I was able to speak to my experiences in applications and cover letters and lay out my vision of what I could accomplish with AmeriCorps VISTA.”

“I know that, without AmeriCorps, I would not have found the passion to serve my community in the way I have. It’s because of the experiences with Mission: St. Louis and the people that I’ve gotten to know throughout my journey that I am learning exactly who I can be and who I’m meant to be.”
